Reverse DNS lookup

A reverse DNS PTR record maps an IP address to a hostname. Mail servers often need it; PTR records are usually managed by the address space owner or provider.

Practical guidance

For mail servers, check that PTR agrees with the hostname’s forward A or AAAA record. Editing the normal domain zone does not necessarily update PTR. Ask the IP provider when reverse-zone control is not delegated.

Before using this tool

Define what you need from Reverse DNS lookup and prepare the relevant input. When diagnosing a live service, record the test time and connection conditions so you can compare results after configuration changes. Check findings against the documentation for your software.
